1. Natuurlijk Licht | Natural Light
Monterossa Cinque Terre |
Light is one of the most important things when you are taking picture. With natural light, you get the most beautiful pictures. During the summer, try to shoot early in the morning or late in the afternoon for the best light. If you shoot in bright sunlight in the middle of the day, you often get harsh shadows. You can also wait for the 'Golden Hour', the hour that the sun sets, for an orange glow on your photos. Always beautiful, as you see in the photo above in Cinque Terre.
3. Reflectie | Reflection
Lanzarote |
Play with reflection for surprising photos. Like early in the morning at the poolside. A pool of water after a rain shower also works wonders.
3. Regel Van Derden | Rule Of Thirds
Fort Lauderdale VS |
The rule of thirds is a composition rule in photography that allows you to take an interesting picture that is nicely balanced.
You can set a grid on the settings of your camera on your smartphone. The image is divided into nine equal planes by two horizontal and two vertical lines. The photo is devided in three parts. This also creates intersections. If you put your subject in one of the intersections, your picture is nicely balanced and your eye is drawn to the subject. Give it a try!
4. Vroege Vogel | Early Bird
Lanzerote Gran Canaria |
It depends whether you go to a tourist resort or not, but you often do not want other tourists in some photos. I advice to get up early in the morning and then go on the road to shoot pictures. Oh so quiet...
6. Uitzichten | Views
Porto |
It is always cool to see a city, country or mountain from the top. Climb a tower or stairs or take the cable car. You get a completely different view of a city or environment and you can take breathtaking pictures!
7. Verschillende Standpunten | Points Of View
Lissabon Portugal |
Monterosso Cinque Terre |
Denk 'out of the box!'.
I often tell it during my workshops to try out several points of view. So not only from eye level and straight from the front, but look up, you often discover surprising things, such as a vintage billboard. Or look down, as with the photos with the umbrellas. You can now see the stripes on the umbrellas better than if you were to photograph them from eye level. Think 'out of the box!'.
8. Details
Lissabon Portugal |
Also look at details, for example of these tiles in Lisbon. Certainly if you make a series of the same subject, a detailed photo can not be missed. I often take a picture of the whole subject and also of a detail, if it is interesting enough.
9. Spelen Met Kleur | Play With Color
Funchal Madeira |
Lissabon Portugal |
Color can not be missed on holiday photos, at least not in my photos. I am always looking for color, so also when I am traveling. Especially in the southern countries, the houses often have a color and there are surprising murals to be found. You often do not have to look far to put some color on your photo.
10. Patronen | Patterns
Brantome Frankrijk |
I just love tiles with different designs on buildings and floors, that is why I like to go to Portugal. You see one nice tile after another in different colors and patterns. You can find beautiful floor tiles in Spain and France too.
11. Storytelling
Altea Spanje |
Parijs Frankrijk |
Dordogne Frankrijk |
Photos of a landscape or beach are sooo standard. It is fun to search for unexpected things, which can let you make unique photos. On trips I love to wander through small streets, flea markets and local markets. Tell a story with your photo. Take a good look around and find your story!
12. Symmetrie | Symmetry
Funchal Madeira |
Symmetry is the opposite of the rule of thirds. Here you focus on a center point in your photo, which creates a good balance. Like this painted door in Madeira. With this, a grid on your camera can also help you to take a good photo.
13. Flatlay
Lissabon Portugal |
I also make Flatlay photos during a trip. I always like to make a 'local' Flatlay in the Airbnb or apartment where I stay. I collect a few souvenirs and combine them with items that can be found in the apartment. This I lay down in a beautiful composition on the floor or table, This flatlay I made in Lisbon, as you can see from the props.
14. Bewerken | Editing
Sintra Portugal - niet bewerkt |
Sintra Portugal - bewerkt |
Editing your photos is very important for the look and feel of your photo and especially when they are for Instagram. With photo editing you get rid of the unevenness and give a little more extra to the photo. On the photo of the Pena Palace I got rid of the tourists and made the photo lighter and more colorful. Better right? Typical Hipaholic!
